A touch of patriotism...

My mum talked to my aunty last night, who is in Iceland and works for the department of Births, Deaths and Marriages (hatches, matches and dispatches...)...

Mum was ringing because a friend's son is thinking of going to work in Iceland for a while, and while his dad is Icelandic, he, himself was born in Australia and so he needed to know if he needed a Visa or not...

Anyway, Aunty Erla tells mum there is currently a four year amnesty, which is ending - get this - 10 days time, during which ex-pat citizens can renew their citizenship. This applies to Icelandic born citizens who took other citizenship and thereby automatically, if sometimes unknowingly (like my mum), gave up their Icelandic citizenship. All they have to do is send of their Icelandic birthcertificates and apply by the 30th of June... Talk about sheer LUCK for mum!!!

Anyway, mum also found out that if I send a copy of my Icelandic citizenship, my change of name document, my marriage certificate, and the boys birth certificates, then the boys will become Icelandic citizens as well, AND Dave will be an honourary citizen (when travelling with me), so none of us need Visas to visit the "old country"!!! Whoo hoo!

There is an added benefit to this... Iceland doesn't have an army and so is effectively neutral in the event of a World War... So, let's say conscription were to be re-introduced in Australia, the boys could leave Australia on their Icelandic passports and avoid conscription! They would have to, effectively, renounce their Icelandic citizenship, but there you go!
